provisional figures 2008: break-even adjusted EBIT

  • Alexanderwerk AG presents a break-even adjusted EBIT after EUR -2.78 million in the preceding year
  • Due to pre-tax expense effects in the amount of EUR 1.16 million from previous years, a restatement was required in accordance with IAS 8
  • The Executive Board presents a positive outlook and announces strategic reorganization

Remscheid, April 14, 2009 – According to the first preliminary figures, Alexanderwerk AG, a specialist in the development and manufacture of machinery and equipment for the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries, achieved a consolidated break-even adjusted operating result (EBIT) in the 2008 financial year with sales growth of 7.4% to EUR 20.5 million. The adjustments concern extraordinary one-off effects.

Due to an incorrect recognition of income and expenses with a balance of EUR 1.16 million before taxes, which is attributable to transactions from previous years, the 2008 consolidated financial statements for 2007 will contain a restatement in accordance with IAS 8. As a result, (adjusted) EBIT will decrease from EUR -1.62 million to EUR -2.78 million for 2007. The corrections are reflected in the individual financial statements of Alexanderwerk AG in current accounts.

GOOD SALES PERFORMANCE IN CORE BUSINESS DESPITE GLOBAL RECESSION

While the economy as a whole suffered massively from the consequences of the financial market crisis in the second half of the year, Alexanderwerk AG was able to generate a growth in sales in both the third and fourth quarters of 2008. Despite extremely difficult market conditions, the U.S. subsidiary, Alexanderwerk Inc., was fortunately able to make a positive contribution. In 2009, demand in the core business areas remains stable. According to preliminary figures, sales in the traditionally weak 1st quarter of 2009 amounted EUR 2.85 million and were thus still at the level of the previous year. In the planning for the current financial year, however, sales forecasts were significantly lower for an abundance of commercial caution, taking into account the recession.

STRATEGIC REORGANIZATION OF THE GROUP WITH SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES

The Executive Board has prepared a comprehensive plan for the strategic reorganization of the Alexanderwerk Group, which is about to be implemented. An essential component of the concept is a „two-divisional model“ in order to concentrate on responsibility for product, sales and operating results for companies with a strong operational focus. Furthermore, the administrative functions for these divisions will be streamlined and bundled. This is expected to result in significant fixed cost advantages and thus ensure future viability.
